Calling all intelligence activity "spying" is incredibly misleading....and naive..., "Spying" to most people would mean active human intelligence operations, which is only a small part of intelligence agencies work. More importantly, when countries deal with things, they have diplomacy at one end of the spectrum and warfare at the other. Assad, the father, also had a reputation for honoring agreements, no small thing in that part of the world. That's why establishment guys like James Baker have been, and still are, arguing that Syria could be "flipped"....[ it just did again...after being paid handsomely in many different ways...]. Assad, the father, could successfully play this game. Assad, the son, on the other hand, is not the brightest bulb in the region. And there lies the problem....only for Israel until he delivers on the last installments of the Grand Bargain......
Assad, the son, wants the respect his father was given. He's a little like Alfredo in the Godfather. And like Alfredo he's prone to making fundamental mistakes that have lethal consequences... That's why the Israelis, the US and Syria for that matter, played down the leveling of Assad's North Korean built nuclear plant, something that Assad, the father, would not have likely done. No chance...the two state solution is no longer viable..it is ironic that the occupation will lead to the end of a Jewish State...there can be no other resolution now but a one state one man one vote result... Israel can grant voting rights to non resident Jews but in the next 20 years or sooner, they will be a minority... It is South Africa with no Mandela willing to forgive and forget....It doesn't matter what Bibi or Obama or anyone else does...demography is destiny....so, the only alternative left for the extreme right wing spanning Israel in the next few decades will be to tilt towards the "Jordanian Option..." again....and a massive Transfer of Arab Palestinians/Israelis into Jordan and elsewhere....

As for contentions that Syria wants Golan back; I disagree. Syria wants Lebanon! It seems in an inevitable war whereas HA is decimated and Lebanon in ruins; Syria will be asked to move in militarily(supposedly to keep order along the lines of 75-76)and the cycle will be complete....
When will you understand that Israel has already won not just the battle with Syria but the war? Syria is an ultra corrupt and very poor police state in which a small minority oppresses and sucks hope from the masses. 17.8% of Syrian women over 15 are illiterate!
